Cruciferous at Heart

Did you know… Broccoli and Brussels sprouts are associated with reduced blood vessel disease in women, a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition showed.
The cruciferous vegetables can help protect against the build up of calcium in blood vessels, thus reducing the risk of heart attacks and stroke.
The study suggested that it could be the high vitamin K levels in these foods which could protect against the calcium build up.
It can also be to do with the high content of powerful phytonutrients (nutrients unique to plants) such as sulforaphane which are anti-inflammatory, and nitrates too which can be converted to nitric oxide and protect our blood vessels (check out the amazing work of Dr Caldwell Esselstyn on preventing and reversing heart disease here)
Another point is regarding the positive effect of plant nutrients and fibres on the gut microbiome, which is also linked to heart and vessel health.
And to all the men out there… don’t worry! We can also reap the benefits of this great family of vegetables!
